U.S. Sweeps Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals

Led by singles victories from CiCi Bellis, Tornado Alicia Black, Michael Mmoh and William Blumberg, the United States won both the Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals on Sunday in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, sweeping the 16-and-under world team titles for the second time in the last seven years.

The top-seeded Junior Fed Cup team of Bellis (15, Atherton, Calif.), Black (16, Boca Raton, Fla.) and Sofia Kenin (15, Pembroke Pines, Fla.) carried the U.S. to its third Junior Fed Cup title (2008, 2012) without losing a singles or doubles match this week. In Sunday’s final against unseeded Slovakia, Black beat Tereza Mihalikova, 7-6(6), 6-0, and Bellis defeated Viktoria Kuzmova, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3, to clinch the title. In doubles, Bellis and Kenin beat Mihalikova and Tamara Kupkova, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The number two-seeded Junior Davis Cup team of Mmoh (16, Temple Hills, Md.), Blumberg (16, Greenwich, Conn.) and Gianni Ross (15, Burr Ridge, Ill.) also won all of their singles and doubles matches to bring the U.S. its third Junior Davis Cup title (1999, 2008). In Sunday’s final against Korea, Blumberg defeated Chanyeong Oh, 6-2, 6-2, and Mmoh beat Yun Seong Chung, 6-2, 6-2 in singles. Mmoh and Ross then beat Oh and Seong Taek Im, 7-5, 6-0, in the doubles match.

USTA National Coaches Kathy Rinaldi and Eric Nunez coached the girls and boys, respectively.

Other former U.S. junior international team members include Jim Courier, Andy Roddick, James Blake and Lindsay Davenport. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have also represented their countries in junior international team competition.
