Simona Halep steamrolled past Serena Williams 6-0, 6-2 at the WTA Finals in Singapore on Wednesday, handing the world number one her worst loss since she was a teenager in 1998.

Halep came out firing from the onset of the match. She was incredibly accurate baseline-to-baseline, forcing Serena to cover all ends of the court. In the first set, Williams, who is spending her 211th week at number one in the world, managed to win just seven points as the Romanian won all six games.

It is the first time Serena threw up a bagel in a set since the 2008 championships versus her older sister Venus.

“’Embarrassing’ describes the way I played today,” said Serena post-match. “Very embarrassing.”

Serena looked a bit sharper in the second set, but it was much of the same. Despite a few nice forehand winners, Halep was just too sharp. She broke five times and took advantage of six double-faults from the world’s top player. Serena also had nearly three times as many unforced errors as Halep.

It was the first career win versus a top three player for Halep, who had lost in her two previous tries against Serena.

“It’s the biggest match in my life, so I can’t put into words how I feel right now. I feel very happy, I just want to enjoy it,” said Halep. “It was always my dream to beat one of the Williams Sisters, but of course without the help of the crowd I wouldn’t have been able to play this way today.”

The fourth-seeded Romanian is now 2-0 in the Red Group and will take on Ana Ivanovic on Friday. Serena is now 1-1 ahead of her final round-robin match against Eugenie Bouchard.

“I have confidence I can get to the semifinals,” said Halep. “First I have to forget this day, but it will be hard to forget. I am so happy.”
