Playing in his first match since rising to number three in the world rankings, third-seeded Andy Murray knocked off Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller 6-4, 7-5 on Monday night to advance to the second-round of the Dubai Duty Free Championships.

In the opening set, Murray and Muller battled through some extremely long games. In the third game, Muller fought off three break point chances by Murray, and needed to win 30 points before holding serve against the Scot.

In the 10th game, Murray fired three aces but also hit three double-faults and had to save a break point before holding serve and taking the first set

Murray was on serve up 5-4 again in the second set, but this time Muller was able to notch the break and evened the frame at 5-5. The Scot would rattle off the next two games thanks to a Muller double fault in the final game.

“I think the end of both sets I didn’t serve so well,” said Murray, who last played in Dubai in 2012 when he finished runner-up to Roger Federer.  “But apart from that, I didn’t give him any opportunities really. I feel like I got a little bit unlucky at the end of the second set. He got a couple of net cords in that last game, the 5-4 game where I got broken, and did very well to respond straightaway and get the break right back. I thought I played a fairly high quality match.”

Murray will take on Portugal’s Joao Sousa in the second-round.

Czech Tomas Berdych had to escape a first-set tiebreaker and was tested in his Dubai opener, eventually coming out on top 7-6(2), 6-4 over France’s Jeremy Chardy.

The fourth-seeded Berdych notched his 499th career win with the victory over Chardy, fighting off 12 aces and breaking him three times to move on.

“I made it complicated a bit more than usual,” said Berdych. “But it’s important that I won the last point of the match and got through it. Not every day is going to be perfect. It was a solid day to make.”

The 28-year-old Berdych will take on Italian Simone Bolelli in the second-round after Bolelli ousted Lucas Pouille 6-3, 6-3.

Sixth-seeded Feliciano Lopez and seventh-seeded Roberto Bautista-Agut also advanced into the second-round on Monday night.
