Novak Djokovic rolled into the quarterfinals of the Dubai Duty Free Championships on Wednesday, defeating Russia’s Andrey Golubev 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour.

“Having one match under my belt before today’s encounter helped me to feel a bit more comfortable to move around on the court quicker, and I tried to take away the time from my opponent today,” said Djokovic, who beat Canadian Vasek Pospsil in his Dubai opener. “It was just a much better performance than yesterday. Hopefully I can improve as the tournament progresses.”

Djokovic hit a modest 17 winners but was very tactical in both sets, picking his spots when needed. He forced 10 break point chances, converting two in each set to get the break advantages he needed and eased his way into the final eight.

Up next for the four-time champion is Turkish qualifier Marsel Ilhan who upset sixth-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Wednesday.

Roger Federer edged Spain’s Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 6-3 to move into the quarterfinals Wednesday. The second-seeded Swiss trailed 1-4 in the opening set but won rallied back for the straight-set win.

“I’m very happy how the match went. I think it was a good quality match from my side,” said Federer. “I think Fernando played well for spells, but I think I was quite consistent. It’s not the first time it’s ever happened to me, but it’s a great comeback because I did fell that Fernando was hitting the ball well and came out and played very committed.”

Federer turned his serve around after the 1-4 deficit, winning five straight service games at love, winning 83 percent of his first serve points overall.

The six-time Dubai champion will next meet France’s Richard Gasquet who ousted seventh-seeded Roberto Bautista-Agut.

Federer and Gasquet last met at last year’s Davis Cup Final.

“I’m looking forward to playing against him,” said Federer. “Last time we played was Davis Cup final on that Sunday, in front of that big crowd, and it was a lot of pressure.  I think this time is going to be a bit more relaxed going in.”

Tomas Berdych notched his 500th career victory on Wednesday, beating Italy’s Simone Bolelli 7-6(7), 5-7, 6-0 to move into the final eight. He becomes the third Czech in the Open Era to reach the 500 win mark, joining Ivan Lendl and Tomas Smid.

“It feels great,” Berdych said of the milestone. “I need to make sure I keep my body fresh so I can make another 500. I am just going to try to keep adding to it and play as long as I can.”

The fourth-seeded Berdych will next face Ukraine’s Sergiy Stakhovsky, who continued his excellent play in 2015 with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Denis Istomin.

In one of the earlier matches of the day, third-seeded Andy Murray steamrolled Portugal’s Joao Sousa 6-0, 6-2 to advance. Murray won the first eight games to seize control and never looked back.

“Today I thought I just picked the right shots and played the right way when he was struggling,” Murray said of his 58-minute victory. “I didn’t give him any free points. I didn’t make sort of needless errors.”

Up next for the Scot is lucky loser Borna Coric.

The loss to Murray wasn’t the only one Sousa endured on Wednesday. Partnered with Roberto Bautista-Agut, the two lost to the Bryan Brothers in the Dubai first-round. Bob and Mike Bryan won easily 6-2, 6-2 over the Portuguese-French duo.
