Tenth-seeded Marin Cilic fell to Argentine qualifier Marco Trungelliti 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in opening round action Monday at the 2016 French Open. Trungelliti, ranked 166th in the world and making his Roland Garros debut, broke Cilic six times to earn his second win at a Grand Slam.

Trungelliti moves on to face Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the second round after his win over Horacio Zeballos, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0.

On Saturday, Cilic faced defending French Open champ Stan Wawrinka in the finals of the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open, falling to Wawrinka in two sets, 6-4, 7-6(11).

Speaking of Wawrinka, the defending Roland Garros champ was tested Monday in opening round action, pushed to the limit and narrowly escaping defeat at the hands of Lukas Rosol 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The two had just met a few days back in the semis of the Geneva Open.

“Really tough match today,” Wawrinka said. “He was playing really well. He was going for his shots. He didn't miss much until he started to get a little bit tired in the fourth set and fifth. But before that I was always under pressure.”

Also on Monday, it was eighth-seeded Milos Raonic defeating Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(5) in Tipsarevic’s fourth tournament back after missing eight months due to right knee patella tendonitis.

“I was happy I was quite efficient on court. I was able to move on and really give myself something to prepare for in the next match and to be better,” said Raonic. “I'm in good shape. I feel physically strong and I have no nagging issues to start the tournament, which is nice.”
