The Next Generation of American Champions?

Patrick McEnroe resigned a week before The New York Times reported he was to be fired by the USTA as director of player development. Pat is a very nice and decent person, but he leaves behind a dismal record of developing top players given the system's resources. The "churn and burn" of the tournament system, as well as the shifts in development philosophy, is mind-numbing. The current philosophy? I'm not sure … what time is it?

Maybe I'm being too harsh here. The estimated $200 million that has been spent by the USTA on player development in the McEnroe era cannot accomplish the impossible.

If "Champions are born, not made," you cannot blame Patrick for the underachieving gene pool of today's generation of low performing tennis players.

I hope the next director of player development understands the value of investing in genetic research. Forget the research … how about Andre and Stephanie for the position?
